Cuzco – Maras - Moray by bike

El inicio de la Aventura

Maras - Moray by Bike

This is one of the most beautiful tours in Cuzco, very popular for cross country bikers; this trip is a mix of impressive landscapes of White Mountains, Andean towns, Inka ruins, salt mines and mountain biking adventure. 4 to 5 hours mountain biking.

It will be 36 Km distance approximately.

You will be picked up from the hotel at 8am, by private transport out of Cuzco for about 1hr30 until reaching the village of Chinchero at 3650 m.a.s.l.

Here you'll get your biking equipment. During the first part of the ride we'll pass a lake, there are few uphill with nice downhills, there are optional shortcuts for those who like a bit more technical roads

Moray is an agricultural complex consisting of semicircular  terraces , in order to have the shape and current characteristics , they were adapted to the topography of the Waninmarka hill ; south of the semicircular terraces  is located in the upper part, the hole of the Ñusta Hispanic or Kuchi Muyo Muyo .

The use of the hills has allowed the creation of microclimates used for the development of a variety of species, is for this, the concentric shape presented by these structures, which in turn allow the solar luminosity during all the day.

The scenery is unforgettable with excellent views of the Veronica mountain range. The first main stop will be at the Incan agricultural testing site of Moray (3575 m.a.s.l.) and we'll take a break here to catch our breath and explore the area. Continuing the ride we'll arrive to Maras where we'll have our lunch break.

They are formed by three thousand small pits of various sizes and dimensions, however, have an average of 5 m². In drought times these are filled with water that came from a natural spring located above the wells, when water evaporates the salt crystallizes, and then the salt reaches about 10 cm from the floor, and then is removed.

The salt mines belong to local families, which in times of drought treat the salt with iodine and sell it to housewives.

After lunch we'll ride to the crystal-white terraces of the pre-Incan salt mines and then continue on the best downhill of the day - a 30 minute downhill on a llama path, ending on the bank of the Urubamba river (2875 m.a.s.l.). Here we finish the tour and return to Cusco.

Arrival at Cuzco at 5 pm approximately.
